RIP Lokomotiv

Everyone at l’Association Algérienne de Ice et Inline Hockey would like to express our deepest condolences to all the families and loved ones of those at Lokomotiv Yaroslavl who tragically died in the air crash on 7th of September.

Help from NHLPA, IIHF and Algerian Olympic Committee

Following on from the announcement that the NHLPA will donate $10,000 worth of ice hockey equipment to the AAIIH, the equipment has now arrived at our office in London, awaiting transport to Algiers in the coming weeks. We have been given a wide range of high quality children’s equipment which will allow us to create junior teams and start the junior development process inside Algeria. We are deeply grateful for the donation.

We have also been communicating with the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation), discussing the best ways in which to develop the sport inside Algeria. They have sent us various documents and guides to follow, along with an IIHF membership application form which we hope to complete by the end of the year.

And finally, we’ve had several meetings and communications with the Algerian Olympic Committee, who have given us their full support, and have given us guidance in how to develop the sport in Algeria while working closely with the government. We have also spoken to the Algerian Ski Federation with a view to working closely with them in future.

Look out for announcements on the creation of clubs in Algeria soon.

Nous sommes dans le regret de vous annoncer le décès de M. Guy Janodet. Il n’ était pas seulement le kinésitherapeute de l’ équipe Algerienne de hockey sur glace, plus que ça, il a joué un rôle important dans l’ évolution de ce sport de par son travail et son devouement. c’ était un grand homme qui sera regretté de tous. Toutes nos pensées accompagnent sa famille et ses proches.

We are sad to announce the death of Mr Guy Jonadet, not only was he the physio of the Algerian ice hockey team, but he also put in a lot of work behind the scenes and played a part in the progress of algerian ice hockey. Guy was a great man and will be missed by many. Our thoughts are with his family.

NHLPA donate equipment to Algeria

It’s our pleasure to announce the donation of $10,000 worth of ice hockey equipment from the NHLPA to the Association Algérienne de Ice et Inline Hockey, as part of the NHLPA’s ‘Goals and Dreams Fund’. This equipment will go to Algeria for the children who want to learn to play ice hockey but have never had the opportunity to in the past. We are extremely grateful.

This is a huge boost to Algerian ice hockey, it allows us to create children’s teams and a league, and will add strength to our request for more government support and IIHF membership.

Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer le don d’une valeur de 10 000$ dollars en équipement de hockey à l’Association Algérienne de Ice et Inline Hockey de la part de la NHLPA (National Hockey League Players’ Association). You are widely considered the creator of Algerian ice hockey, is this true?

In some ways yes, there were Algerian ice hockey players long before me so Algerian ice hockey did exist in that sense, I guess I was just the one who brought everything together, so I guess I’m more of a founder of Algerian ice hockey rather than the ‘creator’. I have put a lot of my own time and money into it though, it is something very close to my heart and I want to be involved with it for a long time to come.

What involvement do you have in Algerian ice hockey now?

I’m involved in all areas, of course I still play, but I’m also involved in the management side of things, marketing side of things, and I’m working on some projects with the Algerian community in London. This summer I hope to get out to Algeria and help create some kids teams, so yea very busy but I love it.

How did you first get in to ice hockey?

I used to love playing NHL on my sega drive, so on my 12th birthday my mum asked what I’d like to do, I asked to see an ice hockey match, so I went to watch Lee Valley Lions on my 12th birthday, I loved it, very fast and physical, I got hooked after that.

You scored Algeria’s first goal against Morocco in the 2008 Arab Cup, how did that feel?

It was one of the best things in my life, I was very proud and made all the hard work worth it, even better it was on live TV and now its on YouTube so I can watch it for years to come.

What do you see for the future of Algerian ice hockey?

Progress I hope, but its essential we get more government support and some sponsorship for that. Once we have those things we can participate in more games and tournaments plus get the kids in Algeria in to it, there can be no future for Algerian ice hockey if we don’t get the kids in Algeria playing.

In the more near future we have a game against Evry in April, that should be good I’m really looking forward to that.
